Inside the Science of Early Gender DNA Testing: An Interview with Dany Sabraoui

When it comes to finding out the sex of your baby, the standard wait time is around 18–20 weeks into pregnancy. But, thanks to advances in fetal DNA technology, there’s now a safe, accurate and much earlier option. We sat down with Dany Sabraoui, co-founder of EarlyReveal, to talk about how their at-home blood test can detect fetal sex as early as 7 weeks gestation and how it works.

You can order your kit at www.earlyreveal.com. and use the code OVRY15 for 15% off!

Ovry: What exactly is EarlyReveal, and why did you create it?

Dany: EarlyReveal is Canadian company providing an at-home blood test that tells you your baby’s sex as early as 7 weeks into pregnancy. Instead of needing a referral or a clinic visit, you can do it completely from home. We saw a lot of parents wanting this kind of early information and realized we could make it more accessible, affordable and stress-free.

Ovry: What’s the science behind it?

Dany: During pregnancy, small fragments of the baby’s DNA start circulating in the mother’s blood, this is called cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA). Our lab analyzes that and if we detect Y-chromosome DNA, that indicates a male fetus. If no Y-chromosome is found, it suggests a female fetus. It’s the same principle used in clinical settings, just brought into a more convenient at-home experience.

Ovry: Can you explain what the testing process looks like?

Dany: Once you get your test kit, you can collect your sample completely at home and mail it back to us (all included in the price of the kit). We also have a clinic option where you can go in person to one of our partner labs and get your results if you're someone who wants the in-person support of a healthcare professional. It’s private, easy, and doesn’t require any guesswork.

Ovry: How accurate is the test?

Dany: When taken at 7 weeks or later, our test is over 99% accurate. We also use built-in quality controls on every sample to check for possible contamination or insufficient fetal DNA, so we can flag any results that aren’t conclusive rather than risk giving the wrong answer.

Ovry: What makes EarlyReveal different from other early gender tests?

Dany: We target for regions of the Y-chromosome which was designed by our research team and our scientists. We also hold a Health Canada MDEL License, the ONLY gender detection company in Canada to have this certification. All samples are analyzed in Canada in our lab in Laval, Qc and the company is 100% Canadian owned and operated. That’s what sets us apart, we’re bringing Canadian, true lab-grade science to your doorstep.

Ovry: Anything else you want people to know?

Dany: This isn’t just about curiosity. For some people, finding out the baby’s sex early helps them feel more connected, more prepared and less anxious. Whether you’re excited to start planning names or just want to feel a little closer to your baby, we’re proud to offer a safe, accurate way to get that information sooner.

The EarlyReveal test is designed to detect fetal sex only. It does not test for genetic abnormalities or health conditions. Always consult your healthcare provider for medical advice during pregnancy.
